Lakehead University is a fully-comprehensive Canadian university, with over 85+ undergraduate and graduate programs in faculties including Engineering, Business Administration, Health and Behavioural Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities, Science and Environmental Studies, Natural Resources Management, Education, and Law. Over 8,500 students study at two campuses in Orillia and Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, including 1,500+ international students from over 70 nations. Partnered with Georgian College, Lakehead also offers four innovative degree+diploma programs at its campus in Barrie, Ontario.
Lakehead’s English Language Centre delivers academic English and short-term English Innovation Programs throughout the year. In fact, 91.8% of Lakehead courses contain an experiential learning component such as internships, field school, research work with a professor , and community engagement projects. Requirements and Admissions
Undergraduate Admissions
To be considered for admission to an undergraduate program at Lakehead University, we require:
- Successful graduation from an academic secondary school program or equivalent. Visit admission requirements by country.
- Canadian equivalent of a minimum 70% overall final average with select programs requiring a minimum of 75%.
- Depending on your program of study, program-specific prerequisite courses.
- Proof of English language proficiency , if applicable.

Graduate Admissions
Our minimum admission requirement for consideration of international applicants is 75% or 3.0 on a 4-point Canadian scale, with an accredited university degree equivalent to a Lakehead University four-year degree. We advise all international students to apply early, as admission into our programs is competitive. Should you wish to apply to a thesis program, we strongly advise you to contact a potential supervisor and have your proof of English language proficiency complete. Lakehead’s student-centred philosophy ensures you have access to a broad range of supports , which include: international advising, immigration advising, tutoring, writing and math support, academic advising, career planning, cooperative education, accessibility services, health and wellness, medical and counselling supports, security services and more.
Lakehead celebrates the many cultures that make up its student body with students from over 70 nations. Our International Centre is home to student-led cultural events throughout the year, and Lakehead’s Student Union (LUSU) supports a Multicultural Centre and all its initiatives. Our on-campus Office of Human Rights and Equity promotes and protects the human rights of students, faculty and staff by building and fostering an equitable, diverse and inclusive university community.
Lakehead’s vibrant student union, LUSU , allows you to add your voice to student government or get involved in one of the LUSU Centres such as the Indigenous Awareness Centre, Multicultural Centre, Pride Central or the Sustainability Initiative. Not only can you exercise leadership and engagement through a broad range of academic, special interest and cultural clubs on campus, you can hone skills through the Lakehead Makes Leaders Certificate, or by becoming a Global Ambassador or Peer Mentor to new international students.
To round out your university experience, you can keep active through recreational and varsity sports, or maintain your fitness routine in our recreational facilities.
Scholarships and Bursaries
Generous Undergraduate Entrance Scholarships
Take advantage of one of Canada’s most generous university scholarship programs. We make paying for your university degree easier so you can focus on your education. Non-Canadian citizens who are entering Lakehead University from a high school, or who are transferring from an international college or university, will be considered for the Undergraduate Entrance Scholarships. The scholarship is available to the top international students applying to Lakehead University for 2022-2023.
Earn $40,000 CAD ($10,000 x 4 years) with a 90.0%+ academic average (IB average 35+) (Canadian equivalent).
Earn $30,000 CAD ($7,500 x 4 years) with an 80.0 – 89.9% academic average (IB average 30-34) (Canadian equivalent).
Earn $6,000 CAD ($6,000 in year 1) with a 75.0 – 79.9% academic average (IB average 28-29) (Canadian equivalent).
$4,000 Lakehead-Georgian Visionary Award
Students admitted for Fall 2022 to one of our four Lakehead-Georgian diploma+degree programs will also receive an automatic $4,000 CAD Visionary Award in addition to any entrance scholarship they are receiving.
