Algoma is a Canadian public university located in Ontario, Canada. Algoma University is the fastest growing and most diverse university in the province of Ontario. Algoma University has three unique campuses within Ontario — Sault Ste. Marie, Brampton and Timmins — that offer students one-of-a-kind experiences. At Algoma U, we embrace diversity and appreciate each person’s uniqueness and differences. International and Canadian students learn from one-another, and truly create a unique and intercultural experience for all.

Algoma University is a primarily undergraduate university with excellence in the areas of Business and Economics, Computer Science and Information Technology, and Life Sciences and the Environment. In addition to its undergraduate programs Algoma offers select graduate certificate programs in Business, Human Resources, Project Management and Information Technology.
Our Campuses
Algoma’s original campus is located in Sault Ste. Marie (SSM), Ontario. SSM is a medium-sized Canadian city of 73,000 people. It is located in Northern Ontario on the border with the United States. The vibrant and friendly community of SSM provides a truly Canadian experience.
Algoma’s Brampton Campus is located in Brampton, Ontario, a lively city in the Greater Toronto Area that is home to over 600,000 residents. Brampton is the 9th largest city in Canada. Algoma University’s campus lies in the heart of historic downtown Brampton. The downtown campus offers access to city and regional transit, and is home to over 1,500 businesses and services. Enjoy great restaurants, shops, arts, entertainment, parks and culture. Garden Square, located directly beside Algoma U’s Brampton campus, offers free entertainment for all ages throughout the year, including many events and festivals.
Algoma University’s Timmins Campus is located in the Northern community of Timmins, Ontario. In partnership with Northern College, Algoma offers degrees in Computer Science, Social Work and Community Development at its Timmins Campus.
Requirements and Admissions
Before applying for admission to Algoma U, be sure to review the admission requirements! It’s important to note that admission to some degree programs may have prerequisite courses required or recommended. Please refer to the programs section for this information. English Language Requirements
Proof of English language proficiency is required for international students to attend Algoma University. One of the following minimum requirements must be met in order to be eligible for direct undergraduate admission:
- CAEL (paper-based, computer edition or online): 60
- Cambridge English Qualifications
- Overall 176, with no band below 169
- Duolingo English Test (DET)
- Overall 110 (including no individual band below 90)
- IELTS Academic
- 6.0 overall (including no individual band below 6.0)
- TOEFL : 550 (paper-based) or 79 (Internet-based)
- TOEFL applicants are required to submit their official result on the ETS Portal. The Algoma University institution code is 0820.
- Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic) : 60
- ENG4U (OSSD) or ENGL12 (BC Curriculum): 3 years of full-time studies with a minimum grade of 70%
- College Transfer:
- 3 years of full-time studies in a recognized post-secondary institution in Canada or the USA
- Successful completion of a two- or three-year diploma from a recognized Ontario College of Arts and Technology (a minimum of four semesters is required)
- 3 semesters of full-time studies (i.e., a minimum of 12 credits each semester) with a cumulative GPA of 3.0
- Internationally Recognized Curricula
- Students completing the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge or Pearson may be granted a waiver, provided they meet minimum academic results in their prescribed English courses.
- Completion of an English Language Pathway program
- To bypass the English Language Test requirement needed for admission to Algoma U, students may complete an English Language program with one of our many spectacular English Language Pathway partners .

Scholarships and Bursaries
Algoma University offers some of the best awards in Ontario, and we work hard to ensure that they’re attainable. We offer numerous awards based on academic achievement and financial need to both newly admitted and continuing students. You may be automatically considered for some awards based strictly on your grades, however you may choose to apply for other scholarships and bursaries.
In addition to Algoma University Scholarships, there are a variety of external awards, bursaries and scholarships that are available to students beyond the scholarships and bursaries Algoma University offers. They are provided and administered through external government, corporate or community organizations.
Housing
As an Algoma University student at any of our campuses, we want to ensure you are prepared with the resources and information you need to make an informed decision that is best for you! Be prepared, stay updated from trusted sources, stay calm and access the many resources available for a smooth transition to your new home!
Residence
Whether living in our dormitories or in our townhouses, all of Algoma University’s residence options feature a private, single room. A single room provides you with the best learning and study environment, with countless opportunities to get involved or hang out with fellow residents. Our accessible residences are centrally located on our campus and are within a two-minute walk to classes, computer labs, the George Leach Centre, the Speakeasy, cafeteria and major transit routes.
Canada Homestay Network (CHN)
Algoma University has recently partnered with the Canada Homestay Network (CHN) to support the needs of students on our Sault Ste. Marie and Brampton campuses. CHN, a not-for-profit society dedicated to facilitating intercultural connections through homestay accommodations, has placed more than 75,000 students in homestay across Canada since 1995.
