Health Insurance Ontario
As an international student, you need to have health insurance coverage while you live in Canada. Postsecondary institutions in Ontario offer affordable plans for international students that cover the cost of many health services and treatments.
How to get coverage
If you are eligible, you will be automatically registered for the student health plan. Your institution will add the cost to your tuition and student fees.
Check with your institution for details about the health plan and who is eligible.
Tip
Remember to carry your health insurance card at all times to make sure you can get access to care if there is a medical emergency.
What is covered
Your international student health plan ensures you have affordable access to basic and emergency healthcare. You may have to pay for some services and treatments (such as prescription drugs), but many costs will be covered.
If you have dependents living with you in Canada, you may be able to add them to your plan for an additional fee.
Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP)
As an international student, you are not eligible for the provincial health plan, known as the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). Only Canadian citizens, dual citizens and permanent residents can apply for OHIP.
Exemptions
You may be exempt from your institution’s plan if you are already covered by other plans. Check with your institution for more details.
