Profile
Northern College is one of 24 publicly funded colleges in Ontario. The college’s catchment area extends across 58,000 square miles or 150,200 square kilometers. More than 65 communities within Northeastern Ontario are served by four campuses located in Timmins (Porcupine), Kirkland Lake, Moosonee and Haileybury.
Annual enrolment is approximately 2,000 full-time students. Including distance learning and part-time students, enrolment exceeds 8,000 students. The total number of international students is about 500-700.
Northern College offers over 75 full-time, part-time, certificate, diploma, apprenticeship, bachelor and post-graduate certificate programs. For international students, we have three intakes each year: September, January and May.
Some of our most popular programs for international students include: Accounting, Marketing, Human Resources, Social Services Worker, Early Childhood Educator, Addiction and Mental Health Worker, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Welding Engineering, Police Foundations, Paramedic, Practical Nursing, Personal Support Worker, Mining Engineering and Environmental Engineering.
Northern offers support for international students with English as a Second Languages (ESL) and English for Academic Purpose (EAP) programs to help improve your English skills.
Northern College also partners with Northern Ontario Universities to offer multiple degrees to improve and enhance your skills.
Requirements and Admissions
Academic entrance requirements:
- Grade 12 Ontario high school graduation or equivalent.
- Specific subject requirements vary from program to program. See full requirements.
English proficiency requirements:
- We accept valid IELTS (academic), TOEFL, PTE and Duolingo.
- Most of our diploma and certificate programs require IELTS (academic) overall no less than 6 and one band could 5.5. However, some programs have higher requirements. See specific program requirements.

Northern College is located in Northern Ontario. We are surrounded by hundreds of freshwater lakes and forests. Our communities have an abundance of walking trails and nature.
We have attractions and activities that showcase the animals and locations that demonstrate the best that our area has to offer.
We can help you explore a new sport like skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, swimming, kayaking or birdwatching, as well as community-based events and festivals.
Scholarships and Bursaries
We believe in you!
Over 500 scholarships, bursaries and awards are available to Northern College students annually. Close to 1,000 Northern College students receive scholarships, bursaries and awards every year. We offer specific bursaries for International Students studying at Northern.
$700,000+ is awarded in scholarships, bursaries and awards to Northern College students annually thanks to the generosity of our donors.
Housing
Timmins and Haileybury Campuses offer on-site residence.
Student services staff or student life coordinators on each campus can also help students find off-campus accommodation. For housing supports and resources, you can also join the Northern College Social Media Groups where community members post their own rental listings.
